Alpine Farming –
Living Tradition

Where the mountains have been cultivated for millennia.

The gentle alpine meadows surrounding Ehrwald, Lermoos, and the Außerfern are much more than a beautiful backdrop: they are the result of a centuries-old form of agriculture that continues to shape the landscape, culture, and enjoyment to this day.

In summer, when herds graze on the high pastures, and in autumn, when the cattle drive brings the villages together to celebrate, it becomes clear how intimately the people here are connected to their mountain world.

47% Of Tyrol's land area consists of alpine pastures

What is
an Alm?

An Alm refers to mountain pastures used for grazing, along with their huts and agricultural buildings, typically located above 1,500 meters above sea level. What matters is not the Alm restaurant, but the livestock: an Alm is considered managed if it is "stocked" with livestock for at least 60 days in summer.

The livestock is "driven" to the high pastures — here, lush grasses thrive, while winter feed is preserved in the valley. The healthy free-range environment benefits animal welfare and makes the alpine milk especially valuable. Today, alpine farming is recognized as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

From Spring to Autumn

The Alm Summer

I.
Alm Drive

Traditionally, around St. George's Day (April 24), the livestock is taken to the alpine pastures. A new beginning that heralds summer in the mountains.

II.
Summer in the Mountains

Herders and dairymaids care for and milk the livestock. From the alpine milk, cheeses, butter, and other specialties are produced – a hard but fulfilling job.

III.
Alm Drive

At the end of September, the livestock returns to the valley, adorned spectacularly. The Alm drives are true folk festivals celebrated throughout Tyrol.

More than Livestock Farming

Why Alms
are Important

✓Preservation of open cultural landscapes & mountain meadows
✓Protection against erosion, flooding & debris flow
✓High biodiversity of flora & fauna
✓Foundation for regional specialties & high-quality alpine milk
Enjoyment from the Alm

Taste, where
Tyrol Comes From

The natural movement of the animals and the aromatic alpine fodder make alpine milk and its products especially valuable. In the huts of the region, rustic delicacies are created – from the traditional platter to cheese noodles.

During your hike, stop at one of the many Alms and savor the authentic flavors of the mountains – directly from the source.
