Gentle mini camels from the Andes – perfect for admiration and observation.
Until a few years ago, they were rarely seen in the Alps – despite being native to high altitudes: Alpacas originally hail from the high valleys of the Andes in South America.
Here, you and especially your children can quickly befriend these llama-like mini camels, known for their friendly character and wonderfully soft wool.
ⓘ Please note: Alpacas do not like to be petted. Observing and admiring is explicitly encouraged – touching only after consultation!
Alpacas have thrived in the high valleys of the Andes for thousands of years, at altitudes of up to 5,000 meters. Even the Incas esteemed them highly – their fine wool was regarded as the "fleece of the gods" and reserved for the elite.
Unlike their larger relatives, the llamas, alpacas were not bred as pack animals but specifically for their valuable wool. As the smallest representatives of the New World camels, they flourish even in our alpine environment.
Alpacas are curious, calm, and peaceful – yet sensitive. They prefer to maintain a respectful distance and observe from afar.
Alpaca wool is exceptionally soft, warm, and lanolin-free – making it perfect for allergy sufferers. The animals are sheared gently once a year.
As ruminants, they primarily consume grass and hay. With their soft soles, they are gentle on the ground – unlike hoofed animals.
For our younger guests, these fluffy mini camels are the highlight of their visit. With their big, round eyes, gentle nature, and amusing ears, alpacas are sure to bring smiles to children's faces.
Moreover, children learn to interact with animals in a mindful and respectful way – a beautiful experience that stays in the heart.
During your stay, you can visit and observe our gentle Andean residents at any time – a serene and beautiful moment amidst the mountains.
